Indigenous Life in Canada: Past, Present, Future, Symbolism in Indigenous Arts and Culture is part of a set of 32-page books produced by Red Line Editorial for Beech Street Books and edited by Marie Pearson. Designed for elementary students from grades 4 to 8 the books offer introductions to the history of Indigenous Peoples in the story of Canada: Symbolism in Indigenous Arts and Culture has six chapters. Chapter one discusses An Ancient Practice focusing on symbolism and human cultures, and why Indigenous art matters. Chapter two considers animal symbolism in Indigenous art and introduces artists. Chapter three is about Location Symbols and the role of the Truth and Reconciliation in this subject. Chapter four discusses the Sacred Circles. Music and dance are included in chapter five. Chapter six, Symbolism in the 21^st century discusses the future. The book contains simply written text illustrated with maps, charts, images and photos. Each book has brief sidebars of additional information about a topic as well as suggested framing questions to assist students in critical thinking.
