Ontario is Canada's most populous province and home to it's capital city, Ottawa. Another of the original four provinces that joined the Confederation on July 1st 1867, Ontario's pre-Confederation name was Upper Canada. The name Ontario is believed to come from a Huron word meaning "great lake".

  • Wasaga Beach is the longest freshwater beach in the world.
  • Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater lake island in the world.
  • Toronto's PATH underground pedestrian system is the largest in North America. It connects 1200 stores and restaurants and is over 28 kilometres in length!
  • Ottawa, the capital of Canada, was originally called Bytown until 1855, for Colonel John By who engineered and oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal!

  • Ottawa is the seventh coldest capital in the world!
  • The biggest nickel in the country is located in Sudbury, Ontario and is 9 metres tall!
  • Highway 401 running through Ontario is the busiest highway in all of North America.
  • Kingston, Ontario was the first capital of Canada, and the Bellvue house in Kingston was home to Canada's first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald.
